Huang Mei Ling (黄美鈴)

  • Age: 10 I see dead people...
  • Nationality: Vietnamese
  • Occupation: Lorenzini Sensor System Operator, Grampus Pilot
  • Appearances: OVA, PS1, DC

BIOGRAPHY (Source: 青の6号 DVD Character Files)
She was born and raised in a wealthy family. Her father is French and her mother is Vietnamese. Because she is gifted with extra sensory abilities, she was involved in a project at the Oceania Marine Development center. After the Zorndyke conflict began, Yamada saw her talent and had her join the Blue Fleet. She is the sole operator of Blue Sub No 6’s Lorenzini System.

My thoughts & opinions
Huang is one of the few reasons why BS6 wasn’t too well received in the storyline/character development aspect IMO. Hardly any time was devoted to explain her background – how she got her abilities, how she came to join Blue 6 etc. The fact that she’s so young makes her character even more mysterious.

This was fortunately retified considerably in the BS6: Antarctica game. We learn that Huang is essentially an emotionally fragile girl who dislikes any kind of conflict, and feels burdened by her psychic abilities. As such, she at first became a target of Juju’s (another psychic) bullying, who even stole her teddy bear. Eventually however, with the help of her crew mates and from Juju’s own realization of Huang’s gentle personality,  Juju and Huang make peace and become friends.

Apart from being a sonar operator, Huang is actually a Grampus Pilot as well, operating a specialized ship with Juju. This is one plot element which I found a little too unrealistic and awkward, and should not have been introduced in the Antarctica game.

A neglected character overall IMO. It would have been interesting to see her interact and speak to hybrids, maybe even Katsuma.

  1. Shouldn’t her relationship with Kino be mentioned?
